Turn: A New Generation of Smart Connected Room Control

An Intuitive and Stylish Solution for Home Automation

While there is much to love about the digital world, not every experience and interaction needs to be digital. Sometimes the feel of a physical device can be more satisfying in an entirely subliminal way. This is where Turn, a smart connected room controller, comes into play.

Turn, designed by Oz Andrews, Kevin Andrews, and Sam Al-Mukhtar, is a revolutionary device that simplifies home automation. Inspired by the cluttered controls often found by the entrance door to a room, Turn offers an uncluttered and intuitive interface that allows users to effortlessly control various elements of their living space.

What sets Turn apart is its unique rotary control. Crafted from 6000 series aluminum alloy, the knurled tactile feel of the device allows users to adjust their surroundings with ease. Lights on, lights off, temperature up, temperature down, blinds close, blinds open – all of these actions can be performed simply by turning the device. The intensity of the adjustments is reliant upon the speed at which the device is turned, allowing for fine adjustments at slow speeds.

Moving between functions is a breeze with Turn. A beautifully curved glass display, centered around a weighted rotating ring, provides a configurable interface. Users can swipe across the screen to access different functions, making the entire experience seamless and intuitive.

One of the remarkable aspects of Turn is its compact size. Measuring at just 71mm in diameter and 41mm deep, Turn can be easily retrofitted into a standard UK electrical back box. This was achieved through meticulous design and close collaboration with display manufacturers to create a custom solution that fits within the limited space available.

The design team faced numerous challenges throughout the development process. One of the most significant hurdles was fitting all the necessary technology into such a small space. However, their expertise and determination led to a successful outcome. Additionally, the team pushed the boundaries of CNC manufacturing capabilities, creating parts with wall thicknesses that tested the limits of production part technology.

Turn has garnered recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Digital and Electronic Device Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements.

With its sleek design and intuitive functionality, Turn is revolutionizing the way we interact with our living spaces. By combining the physical and digital worlds, it offers a unique and satisfying user experience. As technology continues to evolve, Turn sets a new standard for smart connected room control.
